Three years in business and this is what I can tell you

The end of October marked my business anniversary. This year, it’s three years specifically.

My business started as a very part time freelance venture when friends and industry contacts would ask me to do some ad hoc projects as a side hustle, alongside my employed role as a copywriter and publicist for a marketing agency more than twelve years ago. Looking back, I was fortunate to be asked to do some excellent projects — writing for a well known retail magazine and some media releases for performers.

At that time, I had no concrete vision of working for myself as a copywriter. I’m sure it didn’t even occur to me, particularly not as something viable and self sustaining. But I took the opportunities as they arose because it’s very hard to say no to something when people seek you out.

Today, I’m glad the “past me” took on those copywriting opportunities despite other raging priorities because it has set me up so well for where I want to be today. Even if I didn’t notice it at the time!

Those initial projects have a brand name and credibility attached to them that helped to build my reputation and through the social proof of seeing who I’ve previously worked with, new clients have willingly been able to jump on board. And then the snowball effect continues and to this day I…
