How to find clients as a freelancer
So, you’re a freelancer. How do you get clients? They’re kind of essential when you are a freelancer. I have been freelancing for more than eight years and whilst things change annually, there are a few consistent ways that I found new clients when I first started out.
Little Miss Chatty
Tell people. Don’t assume that your friends, family and peers know what you’re doing or that you might be seeking more clients. Be honest and say that you’re looking for more clients and if they know of anybody or could spread the word, that you’d appreciate it. And then buy them dinner when they do help you snaggle that dream client.
Corporate Karma
It’s a real thing! Help out someone and it will return. You don’t even have to burn incense (although it certainly smells nice). Match someone up with someone you know will deliver great service that they’re seeking (see below about graphic designers). Justin Timberlake was speaking good business practise when he said ‘what goes around comes around.’
Also, competitors. What’s that? To me, there’s no such thing. I embrace other copywriters as they are my inspiration, friends, colleagues and clients.
